PERSPECTIVES ON DIGITAL CURRENCY

Security

Pay another Visa card, anywhere, in real time

Every day, billions of dollars are exchanged between individuals, often across large distances. Whether it’s repaying a loan from a friend, sending pocket money to a child studying abroad, or moving money between your own accounts – person to person payments have become a part of everyday life.

In the past, one would have had to go through the hassle of filling out a complicated form or going to an agent to transfer money. What if you could send money easily online, or even through your mobile phone – without having to manage cash, fill forms or complete the transaction in-person?

This is now a reality for many people, simply by sending the payment to a Visa account. Over the Internet, through a mobile device or via physical self-service kiosks, consumers in 18 countries in Asia Pacific, Central Europe, Middle East and Africa are regularly making near-instant personal payments of varying amounts directly to Visa cards.

Today, 200 million consumers in 18 countries around the region can access simple and fast person-to-person payment services based on the Visa Personal Payments platform. Consumers are responding positively too: we’ve seen 89 per cent growth in transactions across the region between September 2011 and September 2012. Of these, about 10 per cent now originate from mobile devices – signaling a significant uptake for mobile-based payments.

With increasing numbers of people making use of the security and convenience provided by this platform, we hope to see this trend continue well into the future.

How You Can Get Involved in National Cyber Security Awareness Month

Guest blog by Michael Kaiser, executive director of the National Cyber Security Alliance

October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month.  National Cyber Security Awareness Month is about everyone doing their part to make sure our online lives are kept safe and secure. The Internet is a shared resource and securing it is our Shared Responsibility.

So what does this entail?

It means taking time to “STOP. THINK. CONNECT.” – these actions are fundamental to online safety.  They are so important, in fact, that they are the headline of our national, year-long consumer campaign that we’re leading in partnership with the Anti-Phishing Working Group and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and with the support of sponsors like Visa who understand that consumers have an important role to play in fraud prevention.

Consumers should take security precautions, understand the potential consequences of their actions and behaviors and enjoy the benefits of the Internet.

It also means:

  • Keeping a Clean Machine and making sure your devices are malware-free and have updated software, web browsers and operating system.
  • Making Passwords Long and Strong and protect your accounts. Combine capital letters and lowercase letters with numbers and symbols to create a more secure password.
  • Throwing out Suspicious Links in emails, advertisements, social media posts and other communications.
  • Being a Smart Online Shopper and making sure the site you’re purchasing from is security enabled. Look for web addresses with “https://” or “shttp://” when entering your payment information. This means the site takes extra measures to help secure your information. “Http://” is not secure.

These are easy ways you can make a difference and help make the Internet safer and more secure for all.  You can also get involved in National Cyber Security Awareness Month.  We have ways for you to show your support, whether you have five minutes or an entire day to spare.

Here are some ideas:

  • Post online safety tips and reminders about National Cyber Security Awareness Month on your social networks. Use the hashtag #NCSAM on Twitter. (Download prewritten status updates at http://www.staysafeonline.org/ncsam/get-involved/social-media)
  • Hold a “family conference” to discuss how each member of the family can help to make their personal computer and other online devices safe from cyber attacks. Read through and discuss the suggestions from the STOP. THINK. CONNECT. tip sheet. (Download at http://staysafeonline.org/stop-think-connect/tips-and-advice.)
  • Add the following signature line to the bottom of all your emails, “October 2012 is National Cyber Security Awareness Month. Let’s make our online lives safer and more secure! Check out details at http://www.staysafeonline.org/ncsam.”
  • Join one of the NCSAM events across the country throughout the month or, if you can’t make the trip, then join us online for our Twitter series including one we’ll be one with Visa’s @VisaSecurity on October 11.

We have specific ways teachers, schools, businesses, libraries, local government, community groups, law enforcement and religious-based groups can get involved in National Cyber Security Awareness Month. Visit http://www.staysafeonline.org/ncsam/get-involved/ for more information.

Postcards from London: U.S. Chip Cards Excel In Trials Around the City

Just in time to travel to the London 2012 Olympic Games, my new Visa EMV chip corporate credit card arrived in the mail.  This type of card was new to me,  so I put it to the test in London, where this technology is more commonplace.  One place I tested it out was Upper Playground, a cool store in London’s Soho neighborhood that features the work of local artists.

Making purchases was quick and simple. The main difference was that instead of swiping my card, I inserted it in the terminal.  Then I simply signed for my purchase, just as I normally would in the U.S.

Other American travelers at the Olympics this year are likely to have been carrying their new chip cards with them, too.  That’s because last year, Visa announced plans to accelerate the migration to chip technology in the U.S.  Since that time, U.S. financial institutions have reported issuing an estimated 1.5 million chip cards as of June 30, 2012, and we are continuing to see positive momentum as the industry moves toward more broad-based adoption of this technology.

Why is chip coming to the U.S. now?  EMV contact and contactless technology will help lay the foundation for NFC-based mobile payments, which we expect to take-off in the coming years.  Chip also provides an added layer of security to transactions and enhanced acceptance for Americans traveling abroad.

Being at the center of innovation is nothing new for Visa.  Bringing chip to the U.S. is another way that we are paving the way forward.

V.me: Making Next Generation Commerce a Reality

Visa’s mission is to become the best way to pay and be paid for everyone, everywhere.  Our premise is simple: to deliver the security, simplicity, and personalization merchants, financial institutions and consumers demand as payments technology continues to evolve.

While there are many new players in the payments space, Visa is a trusted brand around the world for the security, reliability and convenience that come with Visa’s 50 years of experience creating one of the largest payments networks in the world – capable of processing up to 20,000 transaction messages per second. We think we do the hard part better than anyone else – and our reputation is proof of that.

V.me by Visa is our new service designed to take the friction out of commerce wherever consumers shop – online today, and soon via mobile device or at a retail store.  Click a mouse, touch a mobile browser, or wave at the point of sale to access any major payment network account – V.me will deliver the simplicity and personalization promised by Internet and mobile payment technologies in ways consumers can trust.

Over the last several months, we’ve launched the V.me website, the V.me Developer Center and have internally tested the service with employees.  We have now reached another milestone with the beta launch of V.me with our first online merchant as we move toward the commercialization of V.me in the United States.

In the U.S., V.me is now available in beta for consumer enrollment and online merchant checkout at Rakuten Buy.com, a leading retail marketplace with more than 18 million customers. The V.me acceptance mark is now visible on the Rakuten Buy.com login/checkout pages allowing consumers to enroll Visa and non-Visa accounts in V.me and make online payments with a simple username and password through the merchant’s website.  Users can also set personalized alerts to receive near-real-time notification of transactions on enrolled Visa accounts.

While our focus is currently on the U.S., we are also working on plans for how to scale V.me in additional countries around the globe to ensure that the V.me experience meets Visa’s standards for security, convenience and reliability as it becomes more broadly available.

In the coming weeks and months, we’ll be adding more top eCommerce merchants that will accept V.me.  Rakuten Buy.com is the first of a group of merchants that will trial enrollment and online capabilities for V.me as we focus on building acceptance among the top eCommerce retailers.  This will ensure that consumers who sign up will be able to use V.me at their favorite places to shop.

Regardless of where a consumer signs up, their information is entered and stored on Visa’s secure servers; they can add Visa and non-Visa accounts from any issuer; and use V.me at any merchant that accepts V.me.

We’re excited about the role V.me will play to strengthen the entire commerce ecosystem, making it easier for consumers, merchants and financial institutions to do business with one another.

Digital Currency is the Future

More and more people are noticing the rapid shift from cash and checks to electronic payments.  Earlier this week, Canada announced it will withdraw the penny from circulation, citing high cost of production, transportation, storage and handling.  Just today, the New York Times hosted a debate on its website highlighting differing viewpoints on currency and how to “bring dollars and cents into this century.”  There are a number of interesting suggestions – including redesigning bills, eliminating the penny and replacing the text on coins.

One concept discussed – switching to a digital alternative – is already underway.  As you may have seen, we recently published a number of blog posts about the increasing benefits of moving towards a cashless society.  Among them was convenience, reliability, speed – but one of the most crucial advantages is security.  We take our cardholders’ security seriously, and have worked hard to protect them as more people turn to electronic payments as a way to exchange currency.  You can learn more about these security measures here.

We’re excited that so many people are getting involved in the debate on digital currency – and look forward to hearing more points of view.  We’ll definitely be talking more about it on the Viewpoints blog and hope you can join us .  What are your thoughts on the future of currency?

Visa Leads in New Javelin Consumer Ratings of Trust and Privacy Protection

Guest blog by Mary T. Monahan, Executive Vice President and Research Director, Mobile -  Javelin Strategy & Research

The fact that top innovators, Apple, Google, Facebook and Amazon, are entering the banking and payments space is a nerve-wracking proposition to many established firms in the banking world. We are entering aMary T. Monahan, Executive Vice President and Research Director, Mobile - Javelin Strategy & Research new technology cycle where vast amounts of wealth are up for grabs and new players can disrupt established brands to dominate. In Javelin Strategy and Research’s new report The Gang of Four (and Possibly Five) Apple, Google, Facebook, Amazon – and PayPal: Positioning for Payments in the New Mobile-Social Technology Era we examined players in the payments sphere of the emerging mobile-social technology cycle through the lens of three key consumer perceptions that form the Javelin TIP (High Trust- High Innovation – High Privacy) model for mobile wallets.  Our recent survey in December of over 5,800 consumers found consumers rank Visa highest in two of those three categories: trust (ability to protect financial information) and privacy (ability to protect personal information) with PayPal taking second in both. Within the third key category of innovation, consumers ranked Visa sixth, closely behind PayPal and Facebook. Consumers not only placed Visa ahead of their direct competitors, MasterCard, American Express and Discover, but also in front of the largest banks and wireless carriers. However, any mobile offering that doesn’t take the primary financial relationship into account may run into trouble: for its own customers, each bank shoots to the top of the ratings for trust and privacy, and in certain cases, even innovation! But the data also showed that no competitor reached the gold zone of high trust, high innovation and high privacy protection by itself. Visa’s leading edge in financial trust and personal information privacy may translate into an advantage in consumer willingness to adopt its mobile offerings, but alliances between innovators and competitors can shift the landscape overnight.

ABC’s Nightline Goes Inside Visa’s “Fortress of Security”

Last night, ABC’s Nightline aired a segment highlighting Visa’s role in the global economy and the “technology behind the swipe,” featuring Visa’s President, John Partridge and Mike Dreyer, our Global Head of Technology.  Millions of people each day swipe their cards to shop, particularly in this busy holiday season, but few appreciate the technology and investment that allows it to happen while keeping your personal data safe.

That’s why we were excited to work with Nightline on the story to look more closely at the state- of-the-art technology that enables our network to be secure, reliable and scalable – and importantly, manage the high peak time transaction volumes driven by the season. Every day, VisaNet connects up to 1.9 billion Visa accounts, millions of acceptance locations, 1.8 million ATMs and 15,500 financial institutions around the world, so making sure every one of those connections is safe and secure is incredibly important to us.  We even gave Nightline access to our control room in our data center, where they could see the 50 years of experience and investments we apply to ensure Visa account holders can swipe their cards with absolute peace of mind.

Our data center employees took the Nightline crew on a full tour of the facility, talking through the elements that keep our network going, including our server redundancy, heating, cooling and power capabilities, and our external building security. These elements work together without fail every day, even during the holiday rush to buy last minute gifts!

We hope you were able to catch the piece, but if not, you can watch it on the ABC News site here.

Paper or Plastic? State Governments Choose Plastic

As the year comes to a close, so too does the era of paper unemployment checks in the District of Columbia.  The DC Department of Employment Services recently announced that all new recipients of unemployment insurance benefits will share in the advantages that come with receiving automatic payments through either Visa prepaid debit cards or direct deposit.

According to the DC Department of Employee Services, claimants who select Visa prepaid debit cards will be able to:

  • Access fee-free funds at in-network ATMs
  • Make fee-free purchases everywhere Visa debit cards are accepted
  • Pay bills using their prepaid debit card
  • Access fee-free cash at Visa member banks
  • Access fee-free cash at participating retailers
  • Manage their account online 24/7
  • Access their account via toll-free interactive voice response systems 24/7

Government agencies using Visa Prepaid cards instead of checks for disbursements can lower costs and increase operational efficiencies while providing consumers with more convenient and secure access to funds.  Approximately 39 states are using or are in the process of implementing Visa prepaid card programs to disburse child support, unemployment, TANF and other benefits through more than 80 programs.

In fact, today, approximately 30 of 38 state unemployment insurance card programs and 32 of 49 state child support programs are delivered by Visa1

Visa programs are helping states including California, Maine, South Carolina, Connecticut, New Jersey and Ohio save millions of dollars in administrative costs associated with paper based programs – including lost or stolen check replacements, bank processing and handling fees, check fraud and check printing costs – while providing greater reliability for the delivery of benefits.

Visa prepaid cards offer a secure, convenient and cost-effective alternative to checks and cash, providing consumers a better way to make everyday purchases, pay bills, and receive deposits.  Visa prepaid cards can be especially valuable for those consumers without checking accounts or traditional banking relationships, helping these consumers move from an inconvenient, unsafe, and potentially costly cash-and-carry lifestyle to more convenient and secure access to funds.

By receiving benefits on a Visa prepaid card, benefit recipients can enjoy:

  • Money Management and Control Prepaid cards offer consumers greater access to and control over their finances than checks or cash, by enabling cardholders to only spend funds loaded on the card.  Cardholders can track their spending online for improved budgeting.
  • Convenience – Cardholders enjoy immediate access to their funds through direct deposit and can eliminate check-cashing fees.  Disbursement recipients can use their Visa prepaid cards to easily make purchases anywhere Visa debit cards are accepted – in-store, online, or by phone – from paying bills, to making travel reservations, and buying gas at the pump.
  • Security – Like all Visa products, Visa prepaid cards are protected by Visa’s Zero Liability policy2, which means consumers pay nothing for unauthorized purchases made with their card.

Visa works with governments all over the world to help get benefits to people faster and with less disruption while helping save taxpayer money by eliminating the costs associated with checks.

1Data reflects public information available through individual state agency websites.

2Visa’s Zero Liability policy covers U.S.–issued cards only and does not apply to ATM transactions, PIN transactions not processed by Visa, or certain commercial card transactions. Cardholder must notify issuer promptly of any unauthorized use. Consult issuer for additional details or click here.

Fast Company: How Visa Protects Your Data

As one of the world’s leading transaction networks, cardholders and businesses in more than 200 countries and territories expect Visa to work everywhere, every time.

Recently we brought Fast Company’s Michael Fitzgerald into a Visa data center, for a behind-the-scenes look at our network, VisaNet.  Today, Fitzgerald’s article, “How Visa Protects your Data” appeared online and will be featured in the November 2011 issue on newsstands tomorrow.  The article deftly illustrates how hard it is to get payments right. It highlights Visa’s commitment to maintaining the highest levels of security and reliability and how this has grown in proportion to the reach and scale of our network. From blackouts and surges to natural disasters and hackers, Visa invests heavily and consistently in making the best international network in payments even better.

As we look to the future, our core – VisaNet – is the ideal foundation for innovation and growth, particularly as we open the edge of our network to the developer community.  As the electronification of payments migrates to mobile phones, tablets and other digital devices, it is clear that there’s a lot more to facilitating global transactions than moving payments. Learn more about our efforts at www.corporate.visa.com.
