New World Economic Forum Report Underscores the Importance of Data Collection and Use in Context

Last week the World Economic Forum release a report called, “Unlocking the Value of Personal Data: From Collection to Usage.” As part of the Forum’s steering board on personal data, I was able to contribute to the report, which explores the importance of unlocking the value of data in a way that preserves the trust of all stakeholders.

One important theme in the report is the value of managing consumer expectations through context setting. What that means is the use of personal data should be understandable when compared to what is being shared and why. Most consumers don’t need or want every detail of every data flow. What they are ultimately looking for is clear benefits from use of their data. For that they need context.

At Visa we understand the importance of context. In the Visa system, for example, consumers are delighted when analytics are used to identify attempted fraud on their accounts. I have repeatedly heard from consumers who applaud us for working with their bank to flag a suspicious purchase. It makes them feel safer. It is only possible if we use their own shopping behavior to look for patterns. But this data use is expected — and welcomed — by consumers because they understand the context.  And they support its purpose.

As companies explore new ways to use data and the opportunities and responsibilities that come with them, they need to keep the importance of context and consumer expectations in mind. When consumers understand the context, they feel a sense of transparency and control. With context, there is trust. And with trust, there is opportunity.

New Year, Renewed Focus: Responsible Innovation

Today is Data Privacy Day, an annual event observed internationally to promote privacy awareness and education. While the day is an important reminder, creating and maintaining a data privacy culture is a year-round job — an important one as companies explore the explosion of data availability and the opportunities and responsibilities that come with it.

There’s no question that Visa — like most companies — is striving to evaluate how the age of “big data” will shape our business and how information can deliver greater value to cardholders, merchants, and clients.  But in this changing technology landscape, one guiding value remains constant at Visa: the importance of maintaining trust.  So no matter what 2013 brings, we resolve that payment innovations at Visa won’t come at the expense of our long-held commitments to security and privacy that have made us a trusted name in payments for over 50 years.

Hear more about Visa’s approach to responsible innovation:

Visa Competes for a Voice at SXSW: Vote Now!

While South by Southwest (SXSW), the annual convention in Austin that brings together the best in music, independent film and emerging technologies, isn’t for several months, we have a favor to ask.

SXSW is the premier destination for the “who’s who” of technology and innovation, and payments is a hot topic. Visa submitted three compelling future of payments-related panels for SXSW’s Interactive Festival that will discuss how technology is going to impact the way you pay and get paid in the next coming years and we need your help to get us in!

Each year the SXSW community – which includes you – is invited to vote on the agenda. Your vote dictates thirty percent of the overall selection criteria, so make your vote count and choose Visa.

Voting closes on August 31st, so we only have two weeks left. Here is what you need to do:

  • Register: To vote, you have to register. All that’s required is your name and an email address. Fill out the form, hit submit, and an email verification will be sent to you. Even if you registered last year, you need to re-register this year.
  • Socialize your Vote:  Want your vote to go the extra mile? Include comments. The quality of feedback is also weighed in the voting process, so make sure you log in via your favorite social network and share what you think. We want your feedback to help shape the panels.

Shirt? Skirt? Latte? How We’ll Pay in 2020

We’ve seen our payment systems continuously evolve over the last century. Today, we’re about to embark on another major milestone in the payment industry – and an entirely new group of stakeholders has been shaking up the conversation: digital wallet service providers. During this panel, we’ll bring together various financial “disruptors” as well as traditional payment leaders, who’ll discuss and provide insight on how payments have evolved and what they will look like in the next decade. The panel will go in depth about new technologies that are revolutionizing our payment systems and how and when consumers and merchants will fully adapt them in their everyday lives.

From Mom and Pop to Y-Not Shops

The GenY crowd is said to be the most entrepreneurial in history. Technology is now the great enabler for all businesses, but Generation Y entrepreneurs have an added advantage: a lifetime of exposure to interactive digital devices has given them an enviable comfort level with new technology and the ability to intuitively navigate and exploit the Internet.  During this panel, we’ll bring together young, emerging entrepreneurs with well-known small business advocates to explain why mom-and-pop shops are no longer that. It is the young entrepreneur who is setting up shops these days, whether it is a food truck, the latest app, or a time-saving technology.

Postcards from London: U.S. Chip Cards Excel In Trials Around the City

Just in time to travel to the London 2012 Olympic Games, my new Visa EMV chip corporate credit card arrived in the mail.  This type of card was new to me,  so I put it to the test in London, where this technology is more commonplace.  One place I tested it out was Upper Playground, a cool store in London’s Soho neighborhood that features the work of local artists.

Making purchases was quick and simple. The main difference was that instead of swiping my card, I inserted it in the terminal.  Then I simply signed for my purchase, just as I normally would in the U.S.

Other American travelers at the Olympics this year are likely to have been carrying their new chip cards with them, too.  That’s because last year, Visa announced plans to accelerate the migration to chip technology in the U.S.  Since that time, U.S. financial institutions have reported issuing an estimated 1.5 million chip cards as of June 30, 2012, and we are continuing to see positive momentum as the industry moves toward more broad-based adoption of this technology.

Why is chip coming to the U.S. now?  EMV contact and contactless technology will help lay the foundation for NFC-based mobile payments, which we expect to take-off in the coming years.  Chip also provides an added layer of security to transactions and enhanced acceptance for Americans traveling abroad.

Being at the center of innovation is nothing new for Visa.  Bringing chip to the U.S. is another way that we are paving the way forward.

ABC’s Nightline Goes Inside Visa’s “Fortress of Security”

Last night, ABC’s Nightline aired a segment highlighting Visa’s role in the global economy and the “technology behind the swipe,” featuring Visa’s President, John Partridge and Mike Dreyer, our Global Head of Technology.  Millions of people each day swipe their cards to shop, particularly in this busy holiday season, but few appreciate the technology and investment that allows it to happen while keeping your personal data safe.

That’s why we were excited to work with Nightline on the story to look more closely at the state- of-the-art technology that enables our network to be secure, reliable and scalable – and importantly, manage the high peak time transaction volumes driven by the season. Every day, VisaNet connects up to 1.9 billion Visa accounts, millions of acceptance locations, 1.8 million ATMs and 15,500 financial institutions around the world, so making sure every one of those connections is safe and secure is incredibly important to us.  We even gave Nightline access to our control room in our data center, where they could see the 50 years of experience and investments we apply to ensure Visa account holders can swipe their cards with absolute peace of mind.

Our data center employees took the Nightline crew on a full tour of the facility, talking through the elements that keep our network going, including our server redundancy, heating, cooling and power capabilities, and our external building security. These elements work together without fail every day, even during the holiday rush to buy last minute gifts!

We hope you were able to catch the piece, but if not, you can watch it on the ABC News site here.

Delivering Electronic Financial Services in Africa

Greetings from Rwanda.

I am delighted to be posting this blog from Kigali, Rwanda where, along-side Ambassador Claver Gatete, Governor of the National Bank of Rwanda, we just announced a new public-private partnership between Visa and the Government of Rwanda to electronify financial services.

Why have we entered into this partnership and what is it all about?

At Visa, we believe that everyone has a right to access basic financial and payment services.  And over the past six months, we have been working closely with the Government of Rwanda to forge a partnership to accelerate the delivery of such services to the Rwandan population.

Today, we are proud to share an overview of our collective labors: a Charter of Collaboration aimed at developing localized solutions to extend access to financial services to local and international consumers throughout the country.

The Charter of Collaboration encompasses 12 initiatives structured around three key areas identified by the Government of Rwanda and Visa as vital to the development of a fully-inclusive financial system:

Laying the Foundations for Electronic Payments – We have committed to working together to develop the basic infrastructure requirements which will enable country-wide use of electronic payments.  This means facilitating the widespread issuance and acceptance of payment cards and the localization of clearing and settlement services.

Promoting Electronic Payments Innovation –Secondly, we have agreed to work to ensure that Rwanda can take advantage of modern technologies to reach Rwandans who are under-served by traditional payments infrastructure.  I expect mobile payments to be a big part of this solution and we’ll talk more about that in the coming months.

Capacity Building –Finally, building a robust electronic payment infrastructure requires more than products and technology.  To ensure long-term economic success, we have committed to delivering a coordinated and sustained program of capacity building.  This will comprise a range of initiatives designed to increase financial literacy and provide industry training and experience for local Rwandans.

You can see the detail of the Charter itself by following this link.

Public-private partnership is a cornerstone of Rwanda’s approach to development.  It is also a key component of Visa’s global growth strategy as well.  To me, this Charter has all the makings of a classic win-win and we’ll be certain to keep you informed of progress

More on Mobile

Another busy news day for mobile payments, as Google made an announcement regarding NFC payments. It is certainly news that Google is getting in the game by testing a new payment service…something that we’ve been doing around the world for the past couple of years.   But I’d remind you that launching NFC payments in the US this year was just one small aspect of our recent announcement regarding Visa’s plan to provide a global, comprehensive solution enabling consumers to transact wherever, whenever by using a card, a computer or a mobile device which kicks off later this year.

For our part, Visa is fully embracing the spirit of competition, and we are pleased to see the industry’s growing excitement and investment in the mobile space. I’m confident Visa will continue to lead the way in this important category and we have significant momentum on our side.

The key to our strategy is an open, global approach.

What does that mean? Our mobile solution in the United States  is designed to be used on any mobile network, with any NFC-enabled smart phone, with any financial institution and on any payment product (credit, debit, prepaid). Bottom line:  We are committed to providing consumers with choice by allowing them to make mobile payments with whatever mobile device they choose using the trusted accounts they already have.

Contrast our approach with our competitors’ plans and the fundamental differences become apparent.

But if you want to just talk about NFC payments, we believe we are ahead of the competition.  Over the past two years, Visa has made tremendous progress:

  • Visa is already working with four of the largest banks in the United States — Bank of America, Chase, US Bank and Wells Fargo — to make NFC-based mobile payments a reality today.
  • Visa’s mobile program is operable today at approximately 300,000 locations worldwide, anywhere Visa payWave is accepted. To see our solution in action, take a look at this video, which shows a program with the New York City subway. But you could just as easily be paying for a taxi ride in Manhattan, or walking into the major fast food restaurant across the street.
  • Visa is not content to just enable NFC payment. We are already working with leading financial institutions and merchants to launch a next generation digital wallet in the U.S. and Canada in Fall 2011,  which will make the payment experience easier and more convenient.
  • From the outset, we’ve been relentlessly focused on a globally interoperable solution. We recognize that people travel and pay for goods and services in countries outside their own. That’s why the Visa mobile payment functionality on my phone works just as easily and dependably in Malaysia as it does across the street here in San Francisco.
  • Lastly, while NFC is a critical aspect of our mobile strategy, it’s only one piece of the puzzle. That’s why we’re ensuring our strategy addresses eCommerce, mCommerce, social networking commerce and person-to-person payment environments around the world.

But remember, while NFC payments are important, consumers want a solution that enables them to transact from their home and office, as well as in the store.  Without question, the stakes are high. Mobile technology will transform how people pay for goods and services in the future. I’m confident Visa has the right approach, the best technology and strong momentum to grow this critical segment of our business.

A Few Thoughts on Visa’s PlaySpan Announcement

Hundreds of millions of people around the world today enjoy spending time playing online games, engaging with digital media and interacting on social networks— buying and selling digital goods while they’re doing it. In fact, digital goods purchases is one of the fastest-growing segments of eCommerce.

Visa is extending its leadership in eCommerce into that segment with the purchase of PlaySpan, a Silicon Valley-based company whose technology lets consumers make safe and convenient purchases online for items such as game credits, premium memberships and digital goods. Consumers have the choice of using more than 85 global payment methods with PlaySpan’s technology, which is used in 180 countries.

PlaySpan’s payments platform is popular with some very high-profile brands: Its 1,000 or so global customers include 700 of the top application developers on social networks, such as Facebook, and mobile platforms, such as Google Android, as well as 300 of the most popular online games and digital media publishers, including Warner Bros., Nickelodeon, Microsoft, Disney and Adobe.
